Why We Exist

We are committed to "keeping the main thing, the main thing" which is Jesus!  Our heart as a church is to disciple men, women and children by the teaching of God's Word. We believe when this is done in conjunction with the Holy Spirit, disciples grow not just in their knowledge of the BIble, but fall more in love with Jesus Himself. We are also committed to helping people discover their gifts and callings, for the purposes of glorifying God in the world. God, through the power of His Holy Spirit, invites us to join Him in the process of sharing the glorious news of the gospel to everyone around the world so that all men might know and respond to the love of Christ.

Simply Put: We exist to make disciples of Jesus who will join God in bringing the message of the gospel to the world around us.

Calvary Chapel Southeast is a church located in Milwaukie, Oregon. We began as a home bible study in March of 1992. After sensing the Lord's blessing and provision, it became apparent that we should establish a church in the North Clackamas area where we would spend our first three years. In June of 1995, as the church continued to grow, the Lord was leading us out of the area, and we felt led by Him to relocate to a building known as the "Little Red Church" located in Southeast Portland. We remained for seven years hosting 3 Sunday services every week. We knew we need to find a larger facility and at the beginning of 2002 the Lord opened the door for us to move into a larger facility back in the North Clackamas area just down the street from our first building. Throughout the life of our church we have always desired to remain open and flexible to the leading of the Holy Spirit in everything we do.

We are an affiliate of Calvary Chapel Costa Mesa (CCCM) in California. Although each Calvary Chapel church is autonomous in function, we share the basic philosophy of ministry and doctrine as that of CCCM. We believe the Church is both local and universal. We see ourselves made up of those redeemed by the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, who hold to the fundamental doctrine of Scripture. Calvary Chapel Southeast is a community of Christ Followers. Our supreme desire is to know Christ and be conformed into His image by the power of the Holy Spirit. We are not a denominational church, nor are we opposed to denominations as such; only their over-emphasis of the doctrinal differences that have led to the division of the body of Christ. We believe that the only true basis of Christian community is Christ's love, which is greater than any differences we possess and without which we have no right to claim ourselves as Christians.

We hold to the inerrancy of Scripture. We believe that the Bible is the inspired, infallible Word of God. The scriptures are the authoritative and normative rule and guide of all Christian life, practice and doctrine.

Jesus is fully God and fully man. He was born of the virgin, lived a sinless life, provided for the atonement of our sins by His vicarious death on the cross, was bodily resurrected by the power of the Holy Spirit, ascended back to the right hand of God the Father, and ever lives to make intercession for us. After Jesus ascended to Heaven, He poured out His Holy Spirit on the believers in Jerusalem. This enabled them to fulfill His command to preach His gospel to the entire world.

We believe that all people are by nature separated from God and responsible for their own sin. However, salvation, redemption, and forgiveness are freely offered to all by the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ. When a person repents of their sin and accepts Jesus Christ as personal Lord and Savior, trusting Him to save, that person is immediately born again and sealed by the Holy Spirit. All sins are forgiven, and that person becomes a child of God.

We believe there is one God: infinite, eternal, almighty and perfect in holiness, truth and love. In the unity of the Godhead, there are three Persons: Father, Son and Holy Spirit, co-existent, co-equal and co-eternal.

We believe all of the gifts of the Holy Spirit mentioned in Scripture have not ceased. They are available today and are to be eagerly desired and practiced in submission to the Spirit speaking through the Scripture.

We await the pre-millennial, pre-tribulation return of Christ for His waiting Church. The second coming of Christ with His saints, to rule on the earth will be personal and visible. This motivates us to holy living, committed service, heartfelt worship, diligent study of God's word, regular fellowship, and participation in baptism and Holy Communion.

We reject the teaching of "positive confession" (Word of Faith Movement); the belief that true Christians can be possessed by demons; "dominion theology"; fatalistic Calvinistic views that allow no room for free will; prophecy that supersedes Biblical Scripture; the incorporation of humanistic psychology; and philosophy into Biblical teaching; and "Charismania" (the over-emphasis upon spiritual gifts, experiential signs and wonders, etc.)

We focus on a personal relationship with God through worship, prayer and the teaching of the Word of God. We teach both expository and topical studies. We do not allow speaking loudly in tongues or the interruption of our services with prophecy if there is a Bible study in progress. It is not that we do not hold to the using of these gifts, but we believe that everything should be done decently and in order. We believe that God will not interrupt Himself.

Here is a short list of convictions that we try and hold to throughout our gatherings:

1) We believe that the worship of God should be spiritual.

Therefore: We remain flexible and yielded to the leading of the Holy Spirit to direct our worship.

2) We believe that the worship of God should be inspirational.

Therefore: We give a great place to music in our worship.

3) We believe that the worship of God should be intelligent.

Therefore: Our services are designed with great emphasis upon the teaching of the Word of God.

4) We believe that the worship of God should be fruitful.

Therefore: We look for His love in our lives as the supreme manifestation that we have truly been worshiping Him.
